"Glorifying the True God"
Psalm 24:1-2: The earth is the
Lords, and all its fullness. The world and those who dwell therein. For
He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters.
Introduction
This Psalm was written to be sung when the Ark of the Covenant was taken up
from the house of Obed-edom to the hill of Zion. This great event of
bringing the Ark to Jerusalem causes David to think beyond that moment in time
to the great future day when the King of Glory—the Lord Jesus Christ—ascends
into heaven.
Glorifying
the True God and His Universal Dominion
A. The Divine proprietorship of the world is absolute
and all inclusive (v. 1)
1. Man has conquered the earth by the
power of the sword, but it still belongs to the Lord.
2. “The fullness thereof” is a reference
to the fact that it is God who makes the soil fruitful, the air vital and
sustaining, and the water to maintain its just proportion to the land.
B. The Divine proprietorship of the world is
based on the act of creation (v. 2)
1. “For He hath founded it upon the seas”
is a reference to the account of creation in Genesis, the dry land having
emerged from the water and resting upon it.
2. “And established it upon the floods”
reminds us of the fact that God preserves His creation. The preservation
is a perpetual miracle, without which we would have no earth. The hungry
jaws of the ocean would devour the dry land if there was not a constant rule by
God’s omnipotence that protects it.
